Abstract:

Contains mostly personal correspondence between Charles Wagner family members. Twenty-six letters are from Charles Wagner to his daughter, Bertha, written on various letterhead stationery of his companies, Pacific Tannery, Pacific Oak Extract Works, and the Wagner Leather Company. Eleven letters are from Bertha Wagner traveling aboard a ship to Europe to family members and six letters are from her brother, Edward Charles Wagner, to family members, often discussing the family business. Also includes a court notice concerning the estate of Louisa Wagner and a six page typescript by Edward H. Wagner [Charles's brother?] for a book chapter titled, "Five weeks in Humboldt," for a book titled, "Memories of the trail," accompanied by a sketch used to illustrate places mentioned in the book.

The Wagner family enterprises of tanning and leather goods were started by a German immigrant to the California gold rush, Jacob C. Wagner (1830-1896). His younger brother, Charles Wagner (1837-1912) followed him to California and they formally began the family business in 1856. Charles married Phillipina Simon and they had two children, Edward Charles (1869-1940) and Bertha Emily (1873-1956).
